Pain management strategies for patients undergoing extrapleural pneumonectomy

Ju-Mei Ng, FANZCAa, Philip M. Hartigan, MDbcCorresponding Author Informationemail address

Aggressive management of acute postoperative pain after extrapleural pneumonectomy is essential to achieve extubation, limit perioperative pulmonary and cardiac complications, accelerate recovery, and prevent or alleviate chronic pain. Thoracic epidural analgesia using a synergistic combination of local anesthetics and narcotics is the most widely used, evidence-supported technique. Advantages and limitations of this and alternative or adjunctive analgesic regimens are discussed briefly.
